What Foods Should You Avoid Giving to Your Dog?

As a responsible dog owner, you should always be aware of what foods you should not give to your dog. Even foods that appear to be safe for humans may not be safe for dogs. Many human foods have the potential to cause serious health problems or even death in dogs, especially fatty and salty foods.

Dogs and humans are different in many ways, but one of the most important is the way we digest food. Dogs cannot break down carbohydrates in the same way we can, so it is okay to feed your pooch human food—bread, rice, cereal, pasta, sugar, etc.—but it is not the best idea. Dog food has fewer calories than human food, so feeding your dog too much human food will add unnecessary calories to your dog’s diet, which may be a contributing factor to weight gain. These foods can cause health problems in dogs, including constipation, diarrhoea, diabetes, allergies, and kidney problems.

Here Are Some Food to Avoid Giving to Your Dog

Food poisoning is a grave concern for dog owners, and there are several foods you should never give to your dog. While all foods have the potential to cause serious problems, there are several foods that are much more likely to cause problems in your dog than others.

Onions, Garlic, and Chives

Dog owners are usually quick to attest that their dogs “love” eating their fruits and vegetables, but some things actually are not so good for your pup. Onions and garlic, for example, should be off-limits. Hot peppers, chives, and even certain fruits or vegetables can result in diarrhoea, vomiting, increased appetite, or excessive thirst. Some foods may even cause life-threatening reactions in dogs, so it is best to check to see if what you are about to feed your pooch is safe.

Chocolate

Dogs love chocolate. Like every good pet owner, you probably give your canine friend an occasional treat, but be aware that chocolate is toxic to dogs. The dark variety is the most dangerous, with about 70% of the cocoa solids being toxic to dogs. White chocolate has lower levels of cocoa solids, but enough of the baking fat called “cocoa butter” is toxic to cause seizures in dogs. Cocoa butter is found in many processed foods and baked goods, including cookies, cakes, brownies, icing, chocolate-covered pretzels, frosting, and candy. Even small quantities of chocolate can cause issues for dogs.

Avocado

Dogs love avocados, and since they are a nutritious food, it is no surprise that they make a list of foods to avoid when feeding your dog. The main problem with avocados for dogs is their high-fat content. Avocados are rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat, but they also contain elevated levels of fat-soluble vitamins, sterols, and carotenoids. These nutrients can be beneficial to your dog’s overall health, but too much of a good thing can be bad for your dog.

 Artificial sweetener (XYLITOL)

Artificial sweeteners are not only dangerous to humans but our pets. Xylitol is an artificial sweetener found in many pet treats. It is toxic to dogs and other pets and, in large quantities, can be fatal.

Cooked bones

Have you ever given chicken or turkey bones to your dog? If the answer is yes, then you may be putting your dog in danger. Cooked bones can splinter, and sharp pieces can puncture your dog’s digestive tract, causing severe injury and even death.

Grapes and raisins

Grapes and raisins are two of the most poisonous foods to a dog. Sometimes grapes and raisins are mixed and ingested together. Grapes and raisins are toxic to dogs because of their prominent levels of sugar. Dogs have a higher sensitivity to sugar than humans. Grapes and raisins can cause death if a dog consumes enough of them.

Corn on the cob

Corn on the cob is a fun way for kids to eat any summer veggie. But have you ever considered feeding corn cobs to your pooch? You may be surprised to learn that you would actually be doing them a great disservice. It is in herbivores’ best interest to eat grass, but corn cobs actually have several toxic compounds that can make your dog extremely ill.

Having a dog is definitely one of the most fun and rewarding things a person can do. However, it also comes with the responsibility of making sure that your pooch is healthy and fit. This means being aware of the foods you give your dog and what they are made of.
